William Glenn “Cotton” Battles 1/2/40-8/6/23 William Glenn Battles, with "cotton" white hair, was known as Cotton for his entire life. He was a constant worker who seldom sat still; rising early in the morning and working the whole day through was his typical day. You would find him with work boots beside the recliner, dressed in blue jeans with a one-pocket button-down. He needed that pocket. He knew how to do just about anything and was willing to help anyone that needed it. He was a jokester and always had a joke or a story to make you laugh. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gallant and an avid Auburn fan. Cotton worked in Gulf State Steel for 40 years and was a Chicken Farmer for 36 years as well. He worked to ensure his family had everything they needed while showing them the importance of hard work balanced by quality family time. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf, gardening, watching westerns, and bowling. Cotton and Brenda have been happily married for 58 years. They have two sons, Darrin (Shanna) and Keith (Miranda). Cotton became a PawPaw in October of 2000; we are confident that was one of his favorite titles. He has Anna Catherine, Brett, Bailee, Matelyn, and Paten; oh, how proud he was of them. The grandkids were a big part of his life; they all adore him and always will. He instilled a love for tomatoes, hunting, fishing, swimming, warm wood heaters, beach trips, golf carts, and dirt bikes that will be fond memories forever. Cotton Battles passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on 8/6/23 at the age of 83. He is survived by his sisters, Maurine Battles, Brenda Estes, Novice Taylor (Arlin), and his brother Edward Battles. He is also survived by his wife, Brenda, sons Darrin (Shanna) and Keith (Miranda), along with grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Oliver and Jesse Battles, brothers Dwain and Mack Battles. His honorary pallbearers are Brett Battles, Alex Parrish, Arlin Taylor, Tim Hutchens, Sam Battles, and Chandler Huff. His sense of humor, work ethic, love for his family, and concern for others will be greatly missed. We know that this is not goodbye, simply a see you later to one of the most remarkable men we have ever known. The family would like to thank Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for the great care provided. We also had great care providers with Wendy Strickland and Karen Roden DeBoard. The funeral will be a graveside ceremony at Gallant First Baptist Church on August Tuesday, 8/8/23, at 5:00 pm. Etowah Memorial Chapel Directing
