Bernice was the quintessential mother and wife. And that is how she lived her life. Quiet and joyful in her privacy, insightful and beautiful and fiercely loyal to her family and especially her Earl. Earl and Bernice’s love story began as high school sweethearts. As young newlyweds, they were immediately separated when he joined the Air Force, deployed to basic training, then Germany and Tripoli. Earl briefly left the military and their daughter Gayla was born. Upon his re-enlistment they were stationed in Maryland when Richard and Wanda were born. Bernice stayed stateside when Earl was again sent to Germany, caring for the three little ones, until the entire family was able to unite in England. Mom made a home for our family during all the military years. She loved the adventure of England; Florida, she despised because of the heat, sand and bugs; in Maryland again, she fell in love with Amish country, the Smithsonian and antiques; North Dakota, was bitter cold with mounds of snow and she happy to return south. After the second deployment to Maryland, Earl was deployed to Thailand. The family moved back to Alabama, finding a home in Sardis. Leaving North Dakota and military life they returned to Sardis, then bought the small farm, home and chicken house in Whitesboro. Bernice took care of the chicken house, even though she was deathly afraid of all animals. Mom, with her sister Betty, opened Beulah Land Antiques in Attalla after Carl finished high school, which thrived because of her love of antiques and depression glass. She left this world as she lived her life - beautiful, loved and with a stern and stubborn pride. MeMe loved Earl. She loved her children and her children’s children and their children. She loved her antiques and she loved a good book. She loved a cup of coffee or a Diet Pepsi. And because we, her family, with great admiration, loved her back - we shall miss her and honor her in our memory every day. We are thankful for the care givers who eased Mom’s final journey and will be forever grateful. She will have a Graveside Service 3:30 Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Whitesboro Cemetery Etowah Memorial Chapel Directing
