Salena Ballentine Phillips

June 19, 1970 - March 4, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary “Salena” Ballentine Phillips announce her passing on Friday, March 4, 2022, at age 51. Salena will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Jim Phillips. Her children, Dustin Nix (Rachael) and Kassidy Nix (Travis). Her siblings, Donna Ballentine Yarbrough (Wayne), Tina Ballentine Gaskin (Danny), and Van Ballentine (Melissa). She was a loving “Mimi” to her grandchildren, Kendall and Ari. She had a very special son, Ed Gutierrez. Salena was an adoring daughter to her surviving mother, Vergie Ballentine (Calvin). She has a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will miss her deeply as well. She is proceeded in death by her father, Johnny Ballentine. Salena had a true love for helping others. She lived to serve other people. Her coworkers at Boaz housing authority were loved deeply by her. She wanted to mention her tenants and make sure they know she thought of them as her family. She lived by the quote, “We rise by lifting others”. To know her, was to be loved by her. We would also like to mention all of her friends at the Boaz Police Department. Always an independent, strong, unique, resourceful, and beloved wife, mother, daughter, mimi, sister, and friend. Salena’s beautiful smile and laughter lit up our souls. She had a great love for spending time with her children, grandchildren, and family. As well as hunting, fishing, gardening, outdoors, and the beach. Salena asked for a private service with immediate family only. But, please join the family in celebrating her life and laying her to rest at graveside on March 9th, 2022 at 2:00pm, this will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Boaz, Alabama. Flowers will be accepted and can be sent to Etowah Memorial in Sardis, Alabama. If you would like to send donations instead of flowers, they can be sent to ‘Kendall Nix Education Fund’ through Wells Fargo. This is an account to further her grand baby’s college education, which Salena always talked about and was such a big supporter of. Pallbearers will be Darrell Fox, Justin Turner, Mark Cates, Ed Gutierrez, Cody Gaskin and Danny Gaskin. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy Etowah Memorial Chapel Directing
