Alvis Lyle Payne

Alvis Lyle Payne, 84, of Altoona, Alabama went home to be with the LORD on Saturday, February, 28th, 2026. Alvis was born in Altoona on October 26, 1941 as the baby boy of the family. A strong sense of family was instilled into Alvis from a very young age. Roots mattered. He loved many and was loved by many just the same. Before graduating from Altoona High School in 1961, he held the role of everyone’s beloved quarterback, but it really didn't matter what kind of ball, he wanted to play it. He was a star player in baseball and basketball too, and later on in years an avid golfer. After graduating from high school, Alvis joined the Army and served two years in Germany. Upon his homecoming from the military, Alvis found the love of his life - Dianne Washburn. They married in May of 1968, and soon after, he met the second love of his life - his daughter, Elaine. He was a beloved husband and father, a beautiful example of our heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. When you spent time with Alvis, it was very apparent of where his heart was leaning - his Lord and Savior. Alvis was a long-standing member of Samuel's Chapel in Altoona, AL serving as a Trustee and song director. He was also a long-standing employee with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where he spent many years of dedicated service as a millwright. Surviving is his beloved wife, Dianne Payne, and the light of his world, Elaine Payne Hughes (Don) of Ohatchee, AL. He was blessed with grandchildren: Nick Hughes and Caleb Hughes (Courtney) and several great-grandchildren: Hunter, Madison, Dominik, Trent and Kamryn. He is preceded in death by his loving parents Newell and Leola Payne. He is also preceded in death by his beloved sisters Wanda Payne Asbell and Mavis Payne Scruggs, as well as his niece Teresa Splawn. Funeral services will be held at Samuel's Chapel Church in Altoona on Wednesday, March 4th, at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be from 12:30-2:00 prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be grandchildren Nick, Caleb and Hunter Hughes and great nephews Jace Golden, Colby Pierce and Mason Battles. Honorary pallbearers will be men of Samuel's Chapel as well as team and classmates of Altoona High. Go Choctaws!
